چکیده

Vegetation greatly affects the formation and dynamics of dune fields in coastal areas. In the present work, we use dune modelling in order to investigate the genesis and early development stages of costal dune fields in the presence of vegetation. The model, which consists of a set of coupled equations for the turbulent wind field over the landscape, the saltation flux and the growth of vegetation cover on the surface, is applied to calculate the evolution of a sand patch placed upwind of a vegetated terrain and submitted to unidirectional wind and constant sand influx. Different dune morphologies are obtained, depending on the characteristic rate of vegetation growth relative to wind strength: barchans, transverse dunes with trailing ridges, parabolic dunes and vegetated, alongshore sand barriers or foredunes. The existence of a vegetation-free backshore is found to be important for the nucleation time-scale of coastal dune generations. The role of the sand influx and of the maximum vegetation cover density for the dune shape is also discussed.

Model for a dune field with exposed water table

Aeolian transport in coastal areas can be significantly affected by the presence of an exposed water table. In some dune fields, such as in Lençóis Maranhenses, northeastern Brazil, the water table oscillates in response to seasonal changes of rainfall and rates of evapotranspiration, rising above the ground during the wet season and sinking below in the dry period. Understanding dune mobility ...

A Field Experiment for Coastal Dune Reconstruction

Coastal dunes, as a whole, represent a natural barrier between the sea and the land, playing a vital role in the coastal defense against the waves and tides. Compared to the use of hard, man-made structures, not only is it a less expensive method to counteract the coastal erosion problems, but it is also a method that has higher ecological and scenic values in the environmental management aspec...

Trampling Effects on Coastal Dune

Long-term human trampling on coastal dune vegetation was analysed using eight 100 × 100m study areas ranging in trampling intensity JJ'om little or no past trampling pressure to severe trampling pressure. All trampling levels significantly reduced species diversity. Total vegetation cover was significantly reduced only in areas with severe and heavy trampling pressure. Where long-term moderate ...

Modeling transverse dunes with vegetation

In the present work, we use dune modeling in order to investigate the evolution of transverse dunes in the presence of vegetation. The vegetation is allowed to grow up to a maximum height Hmax with a growth rate R that oscillates in time. We find that the presence of the vegetation establishes a maximum height for the transverse dunes. If the transverse dune is larger than this maximum size, th...

Impacts of a woody invader vary in different vegetation communities

The impact of an exotic species in natural systems may be dependent not only on invader attributes but also on characteristics of the invaded community. We examined impacts of the invader bitou bush, Chrysanthemoides monilifera ssp. rotundata , in fore and hind dune communities of coastal New South Wales, Australia. We compared invader impacts on vegetation structure, richness of both native an...
